In synastry,
does a Sun/Moon, Mars/Venus conjunction beat out a Sun trine
Sun, Venus, Saturn, Pluto and Mercury by virtue of the fact
that in the latter, the two people compared simply do not
have the same emotional compatibility as the former couple,
and that first and foremost, emotional compatibility is
valued in marriage?”
Kevin Answers:
John,
“Emotional compatibility is valued in
marriage?” What on earth gave you that impression? Countless
marriages stay together because of a complete lack of “emotional
compatibility.” They may not be the kinds of relationships
that we would want for ourselves; they may, in fact, be the
kind of relationships that one is most likely to see on reruns
of Cops; but these relationships work for the people involved
in them, because as individuals, they need to learn their
life lessons through conflict.
It’s not possible to evaluate how compatible
two people are simply by looking at the connections between
their charts. Conjunctions and trines do not mean that two
people are going to enjoy each other’s company, and
they in no way automatically “beat out” more “difficult”
connections such as squares, quincunxes and oppositions. We
attract partners who can help teach us our current spiritual
and life lessons—partners who can learn their own lessons
from us while we’re learning our lessons from them.
These lessons are not always easy or enjoyable.
The “soft” aspects are restful and
comfortable; the “hard” aspects are stimulating
and exciting. While there are no absolute guidelines for compatibility—I
repeat: no absolute guidelines for compatibility—in
general, we’re attracted to people with whom we have
a nice mix of both “hard” and “soft”
aspects. The closest I will get to making a blanket statement
about compatibility is that we will be attracted to people
with whom we have a similar balance of “hard”
and “soft” aspects as we have in our own charts.
