National & International Organizations

National Council for Geocosmic Research (NCGR)

NCGR is an educational organization whose prime purpose is to explore the interaction between the earth and the cosmos from both scientific and symbolic perspectives. NCGR recognizes many legitimate paths of discovery. Collaboration between traditional and non-traditional modes if inquiry is essential. NCGR directs its energies to supporting education and research into geocosmic studies. The word, geocosmic, pertains to correspondences and cycles that relate earthly events with celestial phenomena.

NCGR counts among its 3,000 members many leaders in the geocosmic field -- a membership group spanning six Continents. To facilitate a global exchange of ideas, NCGR has reciprocal membership agreements with the Astrological Association of Great Britain, Astrological Lodge of London and the Federation of Australian Astrologers. NCGR members can join these organizations at their less expensive domestic rates and members of the above three may join NCGR at the US resident rate. Through a network of chapters located all over the United States, Canada, and Mexico, NCGR seeks to bring together people who wish to share and learn. Local chapters host speakers and study groups, and some chapters convene conferences. Many publish their own newsletters. The chapters are as individual as the people who belong to them. You may affiliate with a chapter by contacting the membership secretary or chapter president.. The best way to learn more about NCGR is to check out their web page!

Astrological Association of Great Britain

The AA was formed at 7.22 pm on 21 June 1958 in London by a group of astrologers from the Astrological Lodge, which itself had been founded by Alan Leo in 1915. The two most prominent members were John Addey, who originated the theory of harmonics, and Roy Firebrace, the sidereal astrologer and founder of the magazine, Spica. They were backed by Charles Carter and many other prominent Lodge members, including Joan Rodgers, Margaret Hone and Ingrid Lind.

The founding members' main purpose was to bring astrology out of the fringe and into society's mainstream. John Addey contributed both his profound understanding of Platonic philosophy, in which the stars and planets reveal the passage of time, and time itself allows the unfolding of the Ideas which emanate from the First Cause, or Creator, and his flare for statistical and mathematical research. At the same time the full implications of modern work in depth psychology had transformed the average astrologers understanding of astrology, which was now seen very much as a means to character analysis and as an aid to counseling and therapy: the future was no longer to be predicted, but changed.

The AA currently has about 1,600 members, 1,000 in the UK and the rest around the world. Most members keep in touch with the AA via its four publications. The principle publication is the Journal, published six times a year, and respected around the world as a forum for high quality debate and discussion. The current editor is Robin Heath, and past editors include Suzi Harvey, Zach Matthews, Joan Rodgers and John Addey himself. Occasional guest editors take responsible for special issues, and in the recent past Nick Campion and Charles Harvey have prepared mundane issues (Nick also edited a history issue) and Jane Ridder-Patrick edited a medical issue.

The AA also publishes Correlation, an academic level bi-annual journal on astrological research and edited by Rudolf Smit, a Newsletter containing information, debate and opinion, and the Medical Astrology Newsletter, the only journal in the world devoted to medical astrology.

The AA also organizes occasional seminars on all aspects of astrology. The highlight of the astrological year is, of course the annual conference, which is always held on the weekend following the first Friday in September, beginning on the Friday and concluding on the Monday with a choice of post-conference events.

Centre for Psychological Astrology

Founded by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas, the Centre for Psychological Astrology provides a unique workshop and professional training programme designed to foster the cross fertilization of the fields of astrology and depth, humanistic and transpersonal psychology. The Centre for Psychological Astrology offers a professional training course in psychological astrology. The main aims and objectives are:

1. To provide students with a solid and broad base of knowledge both within the realm of traditional astrological symbolism and technique in the field of psychology, so that the astrological chart can be sensitively understood and interpreted in the light of modern psychological thought.

2. To make available to students psychologically qualified case supervision along with background seminars in counseling skills and techniques which would raise the standard and effectiveness of astrological consultation. It should be noted that no formal training as a counselor or therapist is provided by the course.

3. To encourage investigation and research into the links between astrology, psychological models and therapeutic techniques, thereby contributing to and advancing the already existing body of astrological and psychological knowledge.

The Association for the Retrieval of Historic Astrological Texts (ARHAT)

ARHAT functions to procure, protect and publish translations of historical astrological works and secondary source material for all serious astrologers and scholors. Beginning as an informal association in 1992, the "Archive" as it is known today, and the Robert Hand Library now house the original texts and translations of over two dozen ancient and medieval astrologers.

ARHAT was once a part of Project Hindsight, but the organizations have since split. Rob Hand has kept the publishing and educational side of Project Hindsight alive with ARHAT. This is THE source for information on Traditional and Classical astrology.
