One of the most valuable resources an
astrologer has is his or her library. Of course, there are
literally thousands of astrology books in print (and tens
of thousands of astrology books that are no longer in print).
This page contains some of my personal recommendations.
These are some of the books that are in my personal astrology
library (and thanks to the links to amazon.com, they can
be in your personal library as well).
I've done my best to list books that are
actually available—either they're still in print,
or used copies are easily located. This means that several
of my favorite books are missing from this page, because
they're almost impossible to find.
One of these books is The
Houses of the Horoscope by Bill Herbst. Long
out of print, it took me three years of searching to find
my copy. It's one of the best books on the houses I've found.
Keep checking this page, and also the BOOKS
section of the site…I hope to have an exciting announcement
about this excellent book in the next few months!

So, sue me for promoting my own
books first! The fact remains that Astrology:
Understanding the Birth Chart is the
only book that teaches how to use classical astrology
to interpret a birth chart. Not only that, but when
you finish working through the book, you will be able
to create your own, synthesized interpretations of
any birth chart. It's also being used as a textbook
in the Astrology degree program at Kepler University
in Washington state. Don't take my word for it—read
some of the reviews on Amazon!
This is the only book to actually
interpret all 144 possible placements of the Moon's
Nodes. Every other book I've ever found on the Nodes
assumes that the North Node in the 1st house is the
same thing as the North Node in Aries. This is simply
not the case. I endeavor
to present a supportive, balanced interpretation of
the gifts—and the traps—of every possible
placement of the Moon's Nodes.
I have to say that when I first
looked at this book, I dismissed it out of hand, and
unfairly. The tone and style of the book seemed too
irreverent to me. Then I read several reviews of the
book that couldn't say enough good things about it.
And I read an article which I enjoyed very much, which
happened to be by Kim Rogers-Gallagher, and I realized
that it was time to give this book a fair chance.
I was 100% wrong about it. Astrology for the Light
Side of the Brain is a wealth of vivid images,
of invaluable information, and don't be fooled for
a minute by the liberal amount of humor thrown in.
This book is a simply outstanding introduction to
astrology, one that I recommend to any beginning student,
and to anyone who is not a beginning student who would
like an entertaining and very enlightening look back
at the basics.
This is a truly excellent book.
By exploring the mythological archetypes behind the
planets, asteroids, signs and elements, we gain a
more integrated, more connected and more practical
understanding of the meanings of the elements of a
chart. It's just come back into print, and they've
also released a companion volume.
This is not a "cookbook".
You won't be able to look up what each element of
your birth chart means in this book. What you will
be able to do is to learn how to interpret the various
planet and sign combinations on your own, through
a thorough understanding of the nature of each planet,
and the element and modality of the sign it is placed
in.
Two more by Arroyo that belong in
every Astrologer's library. In Astrology, Psychology
and the Four Elements, Arroyo builds on the approach
to interpretation he presents in the Chart Interpretation
Handbook.. Astrology, Karma & Transformation
is an in-depth study of the effects and processes
associated with the outer planets, Saturn through
Pluto, in natal charts, transits, and relationships.
Lee Lehman is without a doubt the
modern master of classical astrology. Her books are
not for beginners, however. But if you're serious
about learning classical astrology, buy anything she's
written. Period. Lee is also one of the most skilled
practitioners (and teachers) of the art of horary
astrology. Needless to say, this is far and away the
best book I've ever read on the subject.
This is, quite simply, the bible
of classical astrology, and it's now available in
an easy-to-read volume, complete with 20th century
spelling. (It was written in 1647). Volumes 1 and
2 cover all aspects of horary astrology, and a wealth
of other, invaluable information as well. Volume 3,
which covers natal chart interpretations, is also
available. If you practice classical astrology, these
books belong in your library.
